In and Around Catz Language volunteering opportunity Click, Connect, Learn: Broadening languages provision through online mentoring Do you speak a language other than English? Are you looking to break the student bubble and find volunteering opportunities for September? Are you committed to improving social equality? If it’s a yes, why not volunteer as an online language mentor? Click, Connect, Learn builds on the exciting Language Futures approach which aims to broaden languages provision and promote and celebrate linguistic diversity in schools. Increasing motivation and engagement are integral to the approach with learners not only choosing a language they wish to learn, but also exercising choice in elements of what and how to learn. A core feature of the approach is the personalised support offered to pupils by language mentors who are volunteers with knowledge and fluency in a particular language. Mentors are an integral part of the approach – both teachers and pupils speak about the difference they make and the impact they have on learning. Why mentor? Mentors are supported with their mentoring every step of the way and develop important skills. Current mentors speak very positively about the impact the experience has on them including: Refining communication and leadership skills. Being part of a high profile and highly innovative national project. Enjoying the challenge of helping others to learn and making a valuable and useful contribution to their local community. Gaining satisfaction from seeing pupils develop their skills and confidence as a direct result of their support. Achieving a practical way to share language skills and a passion for languages. Gaining a perspective on language learning and teaching and valuable experience if considering a career in teaching. How can you get involved? We are now looking for online language mentors to support a range of languages including: Arabic, French, Gaelic, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latvian, Mandarin, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Urdu. Mentors are required to deliver a short online session (lasting approx. 30 minutes) once a week/fortnight (dependent on mentor availability). Training will be offered and mentors will be supported and guided on content by the school offering the volunteering experience.
